Long Overdue...

IT'S ABOUT TIME!

I finally have a preview for you. Honestly, I haven't been working on the song too much because I've been more preoccupied with some remixes I've been working on for some contests, hoping to win some FABULOUS CASH PRIZES!. Well, actually, no cash is involved, but there are a ton of awesome prizes to win. The holiday season has also been particularly distracting me from working on this but the biggest factor has been my indecisiveness in regards to the track. I'm really not sure what to make of it or where I want to go. It may be something I'll have to shelf for now until I get a spur of inspiration.

I'm going to promise myself that I'll have something more to show you next time, hopefully a finished track. Sorry to be short, but for now, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwazy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year. I'm out.

MISSING CONTENT?

It seems like the website I was using (up until now) to host content for my blog went down. It has come back online recently, although I haven't been able to access any of my files. As of now, I'm unable to even log in. On every attempt, it has continued to tell me that my username "does not exist", but when I go to re-register under the same username, I am told that it already exists. I'm not quite sure what's going on (anyone have any idea?), but I will try to sort this out, and I'll have to migrate all of my files to another filehosting site. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've used fileden before, but it doesn't have nearly as much monthly bandwidth as my previous hosting service (1GB Vs. 8GB). I'm looking for something reliable and preferably free, as I'm expected to be going to College as a full-time student sometime soon and I probably won't have too much extra spending money. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

MORE ABOUT SCHOOL...

I've gotten a reply from every one of the Colleges I applied to, which is great, though there is still a problem. Seemingly copies of my transcripts have gotten lost somewhere along the way and so only one of the schools actually ended up receiving them. I'm going to have to sort this out before I can get accepted anywhere. Fortunately, if I don't end up being able to make it for one of this semester's programs, I still have a few programs lined up for the January 2010 semester that I'm sure, assuming everything goes accordingly, that I'll be able to get in to. I'm still hoping to be able to get into one of this semester's classes, but it's seeming more and more unlikely as time goes on. Oh well. Fingers crossed!

(Side note: Instead of sectioning my blog posts by topic, I'll instead post separate entries for each Music, Art and Literature and include links at the top of the blog for easy sorting. This way I will be able to post more frequently and efficiently; to be able to post an entry about a particular subject as I get ideas instead of cramming everything into one single entry. I'll no longer feel as if something's missing from my posts as they won't be required to be as long, allowing for an easy reading experience as well.)

That's about it for this time.

Don't play with fire (follow me on Twitter instead).
Peace.

Holy... I actually have a reason to write a blog post, less than a month apart from my previous one, no less. This is amazing for me.

COLLEGE TIME?
(i promised myself i wouldn't do this, but be prepared for informality.)

People who follow my blog (if there are any) should not be concerned of any absences that may or may not occur in the coming months. I am a man of impulse, and being impulsive, I applied to numerous colleges last week on a whim. I've already received a few letters of acknowledgment requesting I send in a portfolio of my best work for review, and have been doing so while simultaneously working on some new stuff to give my portfolio a bit of extra pop.

If there are any people who follow my blog and know me at all should be able to guess that I have applied to most of these establishments to major in Graphic Design (with a few exceptions being Audio pre/post-production), therefore most of my time has been focused on visual art rather than music, meaning my progress concerning the few tracks I was working have slowed, though not halted. I'm still very eager to finish them and show them to you internet people, but I sadly don't have the capacity to work on visual art and music at the same time (Maybe I'll develop a method to do so in my free time, if I happen to get any). I might post some old stuff in between just for the hell of it.

I've recently moved out of my (former) place. I may be doing so again very soon, depending if I get accepted to any of the Colleges I applied to. I won't be specific, but most of the schools I applied to are pretty far away from home, at least 3 hours away. This will likely mean I won't have internet access for a while since I'm not even sure where I'll be staying if I end up moving far away. Chances are the dorms will already be full, so I'll have to do some searching for a residence off-campus, unless I end up going to school in Ottawa, in which case I know some friends that might be able to help out until I'm able to find a place of my own.

Well... I've gotten way off topic. I promised myself this blog wouldn't be overly personal, so let's move on, shall we?

DOES THIS SMELL LIKE CHLOROFORM?

Before I begin with this section, some of you may be wondering "What's with the 'random' titles"? Well, I decided I'd give each section (music: Does This Smell Like Chloroform?, art (?), & literature: Embers Falling On Dry Grass) of my blog a title to make searching through the blog for any specific section much more manageable. 'Does This Smell Like Chloroform?', refers to the title of my first post which centered solely around music, 'Embers Falling On Dry Grass'. something I'd seen someone using in their display name on Messenger, I thought it sounded cool, hence borrowed it for the Literature portion of my blog & I've not yet decided what I'm going to use for the Art portion, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

This one's going to be a shorter update (if you can call it that). Since I will probably be away for some time in the near future, I may as well post some music for the internet during my absence. This file is essentially a demo, a quick mock up, if you will, of what the song is supposed to sound like. This demo began from scratch and was finished in approximately 6-7 consecutive hours. When it comes to composing music, I've always found I've done much better at writing instrumental pieces. I found this one to resemble something you'd find in a movie score, and after experimenting with the direction of the track, I decided I would fully orchestrate this piece. I haven't yet got around to doing so, but I'll leave the demo (referred to as 'the demo' as is currently untitled) here for anyone who may stumble across this blog to listen to. I expect to start working on the fully orchestrated version as soon as I can, but for now, enjoy:

AS FOR ART...
(Yeah, it sucks; I don't have a title yet.)

I guess this counts. Sorta. I recently updated the style of my twitter account to make it a little more intuitive and to stand out from other peoples' twitter profiles. I worked on this yesterday, and I'm pretty pleased with it. It's not done, I'm still deciding exactly what I want to do with the right side, as it looks a little bare.

To view it in action, go here. As always, if you want to be really nice, and for some reason want to stalk my every move, you can follow me on twitter (shameless promotion ftw). I update much more frequently there, and occasionally spit out something witty or random, maybe even something funny.

That's about all I've got for the internet this time around. Until next time.

...Oh... And watch out for falling Sharks, okay? Better safe than sorry.

Peace.

(Sort of) Colossal Updates for YOU.

I'm not dead. I know I've fallen silent for a few months. I just haven't had any real updates to post, and I'd hate to make an entire (or perhaps several) post(s) saying how I had nothing to post about. Not being a veteran of the art of blogging, I'm sure once I get in the groove of actually doing this regularly (when I have something interesting to say, at least), that I will update a lot more frequently, and contribute something interesting to the internet instead of posting about how I should post more often and waste everyone's time. Now that I've cleared up, let's move on to business.

(hit the play button at the bottom of this post for a little mood music.)

DOES THIS SMELL LIKE CHLOROFORM?
Remember that NIN song I was in the process of remixing? (If not, it's at the bottom of the post right underneath this one.) Well, I'm still working on it, though I took a break from it for a time because I wasn't sure where I wanted to go with it, and I couldn't seem to put together a mix that I liked with that setup. I scrapped the majority of what I had and essentially started over from scratch. I've been working on it more lately, having been inspired by The Dear Hunter (I've never been more inspired by American music, ever. If you haven't heard of them, go check them out NOW. You won't be disappointed.) to take a much more orchestral approach than I had originally intended, while still melding that more organic, acoustic sound with the synthesized, electronic sound that I'm so fond of. The two are working very well together and I think in the end it will probably end up being my favourite mix to date (I'll have to get you guys up to speed sometime and post some of my older stuff). I won't yet post a preview of the track, because I want to get a little bit more done before I show you internet people anything. I want to blow your brains out with how different it sounds. I want to melt your faces off. Okay, maybe I shouldn't go that far... I don't want my claims to exceed your expectations only for you guys to be disappointed. So, if you'll kindly just be patient for a while longer, you'll get a sneak-peek at a (nearly) finished track.

Moving on...

EMBERS FALLING ON DRY GRASS
In light of the new film District 9, I've recently had a renewed fascination with the Undead and all other classes of the supernatural. Having not written anything in a very long time, I've also been longing to do so lately, but I've never been quite sure of what I wanted to write about (I could use some good reads for inspiration. If you guys have any suggestions, let me know, because I find it so hard to find a good book, lately). I've had a few ideas lately that I have been satisfied with, though there are two that stick out substantially in my mind.

1. For a while I've wanted to write some post-apocalyptic fiction. It's relatively new and unexplored ground for me, though I don't know why because I've always enjoyed some good post-apocalyptic literature, yet I have never written any of the sort (go figure). I had a general idea for a plot idea and setting for the whole thing to go down when a friend pointed out to me that there were a lot of similarities between my idea and Fallout 3. At this point in time, I knew virtually nothing about the game (honestly, I still don't really know much about it), and I had been satisfied with my idea up until this time; I didn't want to seem as though I was intentionally being overly derivative of the game. I want to do something different, something I've never personally seen or heard about, so I have decided it should be, without revealing too much, a fusion of the Steampunk genre as well as the Post-Apocalyptic genre (two genres I have always been particularly partial to). This is the main reason why I haven't already begun writing it. I've gradually been revising and re-envisioning it so it could be a similar concept, but without the many parallels it apparently had with Fallout 3. I've already rendered some concept art:

2. Write a story involving the supernatural; to not only dabble in the subject, but to have the main (and most likely secondary, etc) character be a member of the supernatural while avoiding the obvious, generic, and I personally think, tacky Vampire/Werewolf combination (I'm sick of those). On top of that, I want to deviate from the familiar genres of Horror, Suspense & other typical choices when dealing with the metaphysical to instead go the route with less cliché, more original such as a Supernatural Romance, or something of the sort. Yes, I know, it may be a little odd, maybe even weird. Understand that the oddness for such a concept is what has me so attracted to it. It will be an interesting challenge to write such a thing but that will be half the fun. The other half will be monitoring the majority of the people react in horror and disgust. ...Nah, I'm just kidding. I'm sure there are people out there weird enough (like me) to enjoy it.

Well, that about sums up what I have to write about this time. I've probably forgotten something, but I'll update as it comes to me. Hopefully it'll be more frequently than it has been already.

Does This Smell Like Chloroform?

For the longest time I was at a creative block as far as making music goes... I'd have a little blessing every now and then but it was mostly a dry, cracking indentation of where the creative juices used to flow... But lately, I've been feeling the spark again, and I've gotten to remixing NIN's "The Hand That Feeds". It's one of my favourite tracks by Reznor, so natrually, I had to remix it first. I'm not the type to hold out for the best for last, not usually, anyway. Hah.

So, I spent a little time on this, about... Well, maybe an hour in total of actual productive use of my time... Most of it was spent tweaking the little things because I have the compulsive need to get a track sounding the best it can within the time available to me.. so it's not a long clip, just under a minute long, but I like where this is going so far. Take it with a grain of salt, it's obviously not fully mixed yet, and I haven't fully tweaked all the rack stuff, this is just a little preview for anyone out there who cares to listen... Tell me what you think, any constructive criticism would do me well, I don't often get my stuff out there to the public to be reviewed, though I think it's time I ought to start, so I can better my works and myself as an artist.

I'll be sticking to this project moreso than my other ones I have going right now, especially since I'm really feeling the spark with this track.. Hopefully I'll have it all cut and finished within a few days, especially with my tendancy to stay up WAY too late... here's to hoping!
